There is growing concern in China that a sharp fall in stock prices coupled with a sputtering economy may dampen consumer spending. The concern has been percolating for a while. Before October, Japanese retailers had been worried that the droves of Chinese tourists who usually fly over during Chinese holidays might not show up for the anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Not only did they arrive, they spent as though nothing had ever happened.
