Recently, I have been using Uber to hail taxis in Shanghai. A lot. During the morning and evening rush hours as well as on rainy days. It is nearly impossible to hail a taxi in the street, and Didi Kuaidi, China's home-grown counterpart to the U.S.-developed smartphone app, largely ignores requests unless the destination is far away.
